The Central Catholic Lady Knights had a feeling before the season that they may have what it takes to play for the Class A Soccer State Championship. CC made it to the final 4 last year and was returning the majority of the starters off of that team. The Lady Knights started the preseason ranked 1st in Class A and maintained that ranking most of the season, flipflopping with 2nd ranked Park Tudor (PT) for a two week period early in the season after losing their only two games of the season within a 5-day stretch. The Knights then went on a 14 game win streak highlighted by wins over Western, West Lafayette, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Eastbrook & Boone Grove. The win over Boone Grove in semi-state put CC into the state finals for the first time in program history.
On the day of the State Finals, the ladies were fired up and ready to play. Park Tudor was able to score early in the game but the Lady Knights kept their confidence up and played very well, maintaining possession and creating 15 goal-scoring opportunities compared to 5 for PT. With 15 minutes gone in the 2nd half, PT was awarded a penalty kick after player contact inside the penalty area. PT converted the kick to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Knights continued to battle. Hailey Fallen gave new life to CC when she scored to cut PT’s lead to 1. Although the Lady Knights outplayed, out possessed, and outshot PT, we were unable to get the tying goal. While the score of the game is not what the team wanted, the effort and teamwork were there. CC ended the season with a 19-3-1 record and was able to play on the last day of the season, which is what every team strives for.
