In an instant classic, Lafayette Central Catholic(19-4) defeated Western(15-2) 2-0 in 11 innings Friday night in the Hoosier Conference Championship game in Russiaville. Starting pitchers on both sides were dominant throughout the game. Western starter Ashton Guyer pitches 8 2/3 shutout innings while striking out 11 Knights. Jacob Marin matched Guyer pitch for pitch and and struckout 11 Panthers in 9 2/3 innings of work. Both pitchers had to exit the game because of reaching the mandated pitch limit.
After tremendous defensive plays on both sides, the Knights finally broke through in the top of the 11th. LCC had the bases loaded with no one out to start the 11th. Jack Hudson hit a fly ball to center but Noah Sanders gunned down Mark Cramer at the plate and the Panthers appeared to be on the verge of escaping without giving up a run. However, on the second pitch to Reece Buche, Carson Barrett forced Panther pitcher Pat Mills to balk and the Knights plated the first run. Buche then followed that up with a sharp single to left to score Adam Dienhart with the Knights’ second run. Dienhart, who came on in relief of Marin with two outs in the 10th, struckout Noah Sanders and Tyler Knepley and then induced Pat Mills to fly out to Scott Lovell in left for the final out.
