Hoosier Conference Tournament

Game Recap

The Lady Knights soccer team traveled to Northwestern high school to play in Hoosier conference action today. Due our win against Rensselaer in opening round action on Thursday, we were matched up against Hamilton Heights (HH) for the semi-final round. Although we had lost to Hamilton Heights 1-0 at the Lebanon tournament, we felt that we had played very well against them and we were looking forward to the rematch.
The first ten minutes of the game saw HH control the run of play. They did a nice job of controlling the ball and putting pressure on our back line. For the next five to ten minutes, the game was much more even with both teams moving the ball and keeping possession for longer periods. Then, for about the last 20 minutes of the first half, the Lady Knights controlled the ball and kept near constant pressure on HH. We could see and feel that the momentum had swung to our favor. We continued to attack, many times building up out of the back or out of the defensive midfield. Although we played very well for the first 40 minutes, we were unable to capitalize and get a goal. But at the same time, defensively we played very well and kept HH off of the scoreboard. We went to halftime tied 0-0.
At the beginning of the second half both teams came out very hard and both teams created opportunities but were denied by the superb play of both defenses. About fifteen minutes into the second half CC was on the attack and Alise Weeks was taken down just outside of the penalty box directly in front of the goal. The referred called for a free kick and while HH was trying to get organized, Emma Gerrety stepped up and took a shot on goal that the goal keeper was unable to handle and the ball went into the goal giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. This really pumped up our girls and it really made HH increase their intensity. The level of play got much more physical with CC being on the receiving end of much rougher play. Emma Bullock and Julie Blichmann were both sent to the sideline with injuries. The Lady Knights continued to play hard and although HH had the ball on our defensive end for most of the final twenty minutes, we were able to clear every threat. After a hard fought 80 minutes, the Knights were able to claim their first ever victory against a very good Hamilton Heights squad. Great game Ladies. Go Knights!
