Game Recap

The Lady Knights shot down the Bombers of Rensselaer 3-0 in Hoosier conference tournament action Thursday evening at LaRocca field. The lady Knights once again controlled the run of play in both halves by focusing on possession soccer and working to take quality shots. Although the Knights had plenty of opportunities and outshot the Bombers 7-0, Rensselaer held fast through the first 40 minutes taking a 0-0 tie into halftime. Shorty after halftime, the Knights were moving the ball around on the attacking half of the field when Sheyra Pumarino found an open Kenna Preston who was able to get the Knights on the board with a nice shot into the goal. After we scored, Rensselaer picked up the intensity. They were working very hard to win balls all over the field. When they did win possession, they would send long balls deep into our half of the field. Our back line of Emma Bullock, Lizzie Cramer, Lindsey Kiracofe, Rachel Gillam, and Hannah Weber, along with our holding midfielders Emma Gerrety and Beth Schafer, did an excellent job of turning away each threat. They held Rensselaer to one shot on goal for the entire game giving us our 7th shutout of the season. Each time that the Bombers would send the ball deep, our defensive unit would win possession and work the ball up to the attacking midfielders – Alise Weeks, Anna Weeks, Megan Bullock, Julie Blichmann, Jill Presutti, Madison Korn, and Madison Love, and forwards – Kenna Preston, Sheyra Pumariono, and Mayra Gaytan, where we would try to get the ball into scoring position. With nine minutes to go in the game, Emma Gerrety was fouled along the touch-line approximately 18 yards from the end line. Lindsey Kiracofe came up to take the free kick. She read the positioning of the players in front of the goal including the keeper and decided to try to send the ball toward the inside of the far post. Her shot did just that curving in past the out-stretched arms of the Bomber keeper giving us a little breathing room and a 2-0 lead. Six minutes later, Julie Blichmann was the lucky recipient of a ball that bounced right to her inside the box with the keeper out of position. Julie took full advantage, placing a nice shot into the back of the net for the third and final score of the game. The Bombers played hard to the very end but today the Lady Knights were just a little better. Congratulations on a well played game. Each game we seem to improve with our team possession and passing. This is exactly what we need heading towards the conference title and then into the post season. Great Job Knights.
