Rensselaer Central HS hosted over 700 middle school runners at the 41st Rensselaer Invitational on Saturday, September 12. Race day provided nearly perfect conditions with slightly overcast skies and temperatures in the low 60s. The Knights 7th grade boys team finished in 5th place out of 17 teams. Knight Isidore White finished 5th overall with a time of 11:16. Seaton Garrett took 35th place (12:35) followed by Mark Cramer in 44th place (12:52). Nick Burton (12:56) and Kevin Donahoe (12:57 PR) displayed excellent teamwork by pacing each other to finish 48th and 49th, respectively. A.J. Bordenet (14:45) and Chris Justak (15:46 PR) rounded out the top seven finishers. The 7th grade team was also represented Sterling Brummett (17:31), Dylan Riley (17:35 PR) and Tyler Thieme (19:56).
The Knights 8th grade boys team ran very well but finished in 12th place in the face of strong competition. Our top five runners all finished in under 14 minutes and were led by Grant Potter, who finished in 51st place at 12:18. Matt Cleveland (12:24), Blake Ortner (12:26), Corey Schramm (13:31) and Noah Wiercioch (13:39) rounded out the top five. Sebastian Lux (14:13) and Stephen Henry (14:14 PR) finished together and just in front of Jacob Benson (14:17) and Brenden Wagner (14:17).
The Knights girls team doesn’t have enough members to field full teams for each grade at Rensselaer. However, the girls provided strong individual performances in their respective races. Sixth grader Audrey Cleveland finished in 8th place with a PR time of 13:14. Teammate Mary Kate Krane finished in 16:03 and also set a PR. Seventh grader Anna Claire Bridge finished in 15:14, and eighth grader Alicia Orr rounded out the team with a finish time of 16:27.
The next race for the Knights is the CC Invitational at Central Catholic on Thursday September 17.
