On a very blustery day, the CC Knights visited conference opponent Rensselaer in a game played at St. Joseph’s College. Central Catholic was in control of the game for 6 2/3 innings; unfortunately it was a 7 inning game. Well, it was actually a 10 inning game before the Bombers finally won the game 6-5.
The visitors held a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the 7th inning. The Bombers earned their 3 runs in the inning with timely, clutch hitting. CC committed 4 errors for the night and none in the 7th inning. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the opponent and this was one of those games. Without a doubt, either team could have won this game with a play here or a play there. The Knights will get a quick chance at redemption this Thursday night when the Bombers visit CC. Another conference opponent, West Lafayette, will be waiting for the Knights tomorrow night, however…first things first for Central Catholic.
Rensselaer won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning when they plated the winning run on a bloop hit over the infield. Rensselaer had runners at 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out just before the final hit.
The Knights had their chances to win the game in the extra frames. With 1 out in the top of the 8th and Mary Page at 2B, Corbett singled sharply to RF. Page tried to score but the Bombers executed a perfect cut and throw home to just get Page. The top of the 9th looked promising with the 2, 3, 4 hitters due up for CC. Burks, who was already 3-4 on the night, hit a fly ball into the right center field gap. The RF and CF were running at each other when the RFer lunged for the ball. The RFer got her glove on the ball, which bounced up only to be caught by the sliding CFer. The next batter, Syd Rose, hit a hard ground ball up the middle that the SS gloved, got to her feet, and threw to first for the out. As it would happen, the next batter, Jillian Presutti, hit a line drive single into the right center field gap. Needless to say, the Knights did not score in the inning.
Defensive highlights for the game included CC turning a DP, recording an out at 3B with an assist from Syd Sterrett, and 2 more outs at the plate.
The CC double play was a very heady play by Presutti. With runners at 2B and 3B and only 1 out, Presutti fielded a ground ball, checked and froze the runner at 3B, threw a strike to Haan at first for an out, who threw home to Alexa Hruskovich for an easy tag play on the runner.
CC ended the game with 13 hits. Emmy Burks had 3 hits while Kate Rosebraugh, Jenna Corbett, and Megan Haan had 2 each. Burks led them team with 2 RBIs.
