Game Recap

When the three class system was instituted this past spring, the Central Catholic boys soccer team expected that their sectional championship path would have to go through North White. This evening, that prediction came to fruition. This clash of 2016 boys sectional soccer champions lived up to its billing. The Vikings, whose only regular season loss came at the hands of the Jefferson Bronchos back in August, came out the aggressor. Seven minutes into the match, North White was able to send a ball into the center of the box & knock it home for the early lead. However, only a minute later the Knights turned the tide, when Mikie Fickle’s phenomenal header found the back of the net off an Evan Cooley corner kick. Then, the Knights defense & midfield battled the Vikings to a draw for the remainder of the half. However, within seconds of the beginning of the second half, Joaquin Gallo was able to drive a ball into the corner of the net from near the 18 yard mark, off an assist from Andrew Pannell. The Knights held this tenuous lead until mid-way through the half, when the Vikings chipped a ball past the defensive line, where the North White striker was able to knock it past a diving Austin Taylor. Again, the Knights & Vikings did battle, until with 13 minutes left in the match, Gallo was able to lead a streaking Blake Ortner, who was able to poke the ball past a charging keeper, then calmly pass the ball into the back of the net for the 3-2 lead. The Vikings were hard-charging from that point, with their most dangerous opportunity coming a few minutes later, when a Viking forward was able to get into the defensive crease 1 on 1 against Taylor. The Central Catholic keeper was up the challenge & corralled his 16th save of the busy evening. With 28 seconds left in the match, the Vikings mounted one last effort. They pulled their goalie & sent 10 players into the Knights’ box, on a direct kick. After maximum effort, the Knights were able to track down the ball, finally breathing a sigh of relief, as Cooley bounded the ball across midfield, as the horn sounded. The Central Catholic boys soccer team earned a hard-fought victory this evening, and hoisted the trophy for their second consecutive sectional title. Congratulations Coaches Yeaman, Coach Thompson, & the 2017 Central Catholic Knights boys soccer team. The Knights will play University in the first round of regional play at 10 a.m. at Taylor, on Saturday October 14th. Good Luck Knights!
